Valley Bell Credit Union is a financial cooperative owned and controlled
by the members, existing for their financial benefit.
1935 - 2009
Valley Bell Credit Union was organized and chartered by the State
of Illinois on June 17, 1935 as the Elgin District #5 Bell Employees
Credit Union. The original charter was for those employees
who worked in District #5 of the Bell Telephone System. Employees
of Illinois Bell who did not work within District #5 were not eligible
for membership.
The Bell System re-defined their districts in 1954 and eliminated
the “#5” and renamed the area “The Elgin District.” On
March 16, 1954, the credit union's By-laws were amended to coincide
with this change and allowed membership to those Bell System employees
who worked in one of the 24 towns surrounding Elgin, Illinois. These
towns were located primarily in the counties of Kane, McHenry,
Lake, and Cook. On January 21, 1958, the By-laws were further
amended to include 10 additional towns, two of which were located
in DuPage County.
The ever-changing districts of the Telephone Company and the expanded
boundaries of the credit union prompted a name change to incorporate
the Fox Valley area into the credit union’s name while maintaining
its ties with the Bell System. On January 19, 1960 the Elgin
District Bell Employees Credit Union became the Valley Bell Credit
Union.
On December 11, 1990 the By-laws were again amended to eliminate
any reference to work locations and allowed membership to any employee
of the Bell System.
On March 15, 2006, a Request for a Community Carter, to include any
individuals who live or work in Boone, Kane, or McHenry County, was
submitted to the IL Department of Financial & Professional Regulation. On
September 1, 2006, the Director of the IDFPR granted approval of
the Request to amend the Bylaws. Thank
you for supporting Valley Bell Credit
Union
